Today’s post is devoted to show you
a set of activities created with a very useful tool called Hotpotatoes.
You can download it here. This
program includes six applications, enabling you to create online
multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crosswords, matching and
gap-fill exercises. You can integrate a song or a video in the exercises.
In our case, we have used the lyrics
of the song I bet my life by the group Imagine Dragons in the
six exercises, so students can listen to the song and complete the missing
words, answer to short questions about it, solve a crossword to focus on some
relevant vocabulary, practise the word order in some sentences or learn some
spelling by choosing the correct option in each case. This is a very good way
for students to practise listening skills, pronunciation, vocabulary and
spelling.
Here you are the
videoclip of the song we have chosen. You can listen to it while completing the set of exercises based on the song:
In this post, we show the first of the activities, called 'cloze', which is about completing some of the words of the song while listening to the song. We will show the next activities in the following posts, as there is a technical problem when we try to post all the activities in the same post.

Gap-fill exercise
Fill in all the gaps, then press "Check" to check your answers. In some cases, you will need to choose the correct option from three aternatives.
In this post we show us a video made
with Picasa 3, a program which helps you to organise, edit and share your photos. It also
allows you to create albums and to convert them in videos with music.
The video we have created is about a
trip, and it will be an example for the students in1st year of
Bachillerato to make their own. We have added some sentences to the photos
describing the picture, and they will have to do the same in their videos.
This way, students will be practising a
little their writing skills and also learning how to use new technologies, as
they will have to upload their videos to Youtube to share them with the rest of
the classmates.
Today we want to share with you a
way to introduce ethical and moral topics of the curriculum for Bachillerato to
students. In this case, we have chosen a very recurrent topic: racism. However,
we have contextualized this topic in the field of advertising, as we want our
students realize how adverts have exploited over the years racist stereotypes
and clichés in order to sell their
products.
To do this, we have created an auto
executable Power Point with a song by Bob Marley that is about racism: Redemption song. On each slide, we
explain why the ads are racist, so students can understand it better.
At the beginning of the presentation,
we show adverts from the 1900’s; then, we ask the students on a slide if they
think racism is only a problem from the past, so they reflect a bit on the
topic. Quickly, we show the answer: there are still racist adverts nowadays,
and then, we start showing more recent ads, being some of them from very well-known
brands, as L’Oréal or Sony. Finally, we provide them a Nelson Mandela’s quote
about racism, which will be an excuse for reflecting again.
